Torbay organisers Dave Haizelden and Keith Sanders like a tough trial and everyone knows this is what the event is all about. This year more than lived up to expectations with the wet conditions ensuring that grip and ground clearance were at a premium.

It had been very wet in the week leading up to the trial, but it was dry when competitors set off from The Squirrel in Ludlow after completing the Clees very efficient administration. After many years in the hands of the Midland Automobile Club the reigns had been transferred to the Midland Manor Motor Club. However the old team were still at the helm in the form of Simon Woodall, Pat Toulmin and crew. Pat was using the Spotify App to keep competitors up to speed before, during and after the event and this was very successful.

Camel Vale Motor Club were able to resolve forestry problems that prevented the Camel Classic running last year and attracted a good car entry although they would have liked to see more motorcycles.

Camel Vale acknowledged the forthcoming American election by naming the sections after former Presidents. There was no ballot but Matt Facey came out on top of a competitive field.
Clerks of the Course Ryan and Ben Tonkin laid out ten observed sections, attempted twice, which went down well with competitors, providing a challenge for the experts but giving the less competitive cars the chance of seeing the top of some hills.

Once again Bristol Motor Club were rewarded by a supurb entry for the popular Allen Trial. 74 cars were entered, dropping to just under 70 starters from The Bull at Hinton. Matt Facey overcame the difficult conditions for the win.
Starting from Holsworthy Cattle Market, Holsworthy’s Chairmans Trial had a compact 55 mile route, incoporating woodland and farm tracks in addition to the well known classic Cutliffe Lane and other sections.
The event was an ACTC qualifier for motorcycles as was the Northern Trial in the Lake District the day before but only Kathy Martin had the stamina to tackle both!
The wet weather prior to the event meant both Holsworthy Motor club officials and the competitors were faced challenging conditions with the farmland and wooded sections being especially tricky.
There was quite a high retirement rate amongst the cars with nine of the 31 starters failing to finish. They included Martin Kessell with a broken diff in his Marlin and Sticker Martin in his newly acquired Liege.
Matt Facey put in a dominating performance with his BMW, dropping only 7 marks on his way to being best car overall. His nearest challenger was Paul Merson in Class Eight with 17.
Geoff Walker was best solo motorcycle. In the sidecars Bekki Eddy celebrated her return passengering Dad Simon by guiding him to victory in the class.

Matt started his day clearing the first six sections, establishing a lead he was to retain for the rest of the day in his Class 3 BMW. Matt finished the day dropping 22 points ahead of second place Ryan Tonkin on 41 in his Class 8 Buggy. Just behind were the battling class sevens of Adrian Booth (Arkley) and Philip Thomas (Melos), both on 43.
