Back to Silverstone with the Mini and Big Grids

Michael wrapped up against the inevitable Silverstone cold wind as Neil waits in the Assembly Area

James Ibbotson had an outstanding CTCRC debut

24 April 2021 – Based in the Wing Complex the races were on the International Circuit. This had the usual crowded paddock as the facility just cannot accomodate the number of cars and support vehicles that turn up for club meetings. This meant Neils rig was parked up a long way from the Assembly area leaving the team with a lot of walking!

Qualifying saw 36 cars take to the track which must be a record for Pre 66. These included Falcon member James Ibbotson in his first race with his newly completed Hillman Imp. Neil was 22nd fastest overall, 11th quickest of the 18 in his class.

Race 1

Neil had an enjoyable race long battle with Martin Reynolds in his 1500 Anglia, just managing to get by in the last complex of corners before the finish line. He was 19th out of 31 finishers, a couple of places behind James who had a great race. The race continued despite a nasty incident when former stock car racer Pete Winstone’s Anglia went straight on after hitting oil and hit Tony Palmers Lotus Cortina who was parked up off the circuit in what he thought was a safe place! Neil was called to see the C of C after he to slid on the oil, supposedly under yellow flags. The C of C said no oil had been reported!

Race 2

Race two was not so interesting for Neil who circulated more or less alone. It finished early after being Red Flagged when Kevin Bottomley put his Mini on its side.
